chapter 1 — lady lazarus

She couldn’t have done better even if he’d asked.
She had paved the way for humanity to seize control of the Council through the abandonment of the Destiny Ascension. Or at least that was how everyone believed it to have gone down. But he knew all that she had done was order for the forces to concentrate on Sovereign.
It was what needed to be done.
She wasn’t quite as different from Cerberus as she thought.
He wondered why she had gone back for Mr. Moreau.
That is to say, why she would risk so much for one man. Perhaps she had thought that she would be able to get him out in time, as she always had. That she would survive, as she always had. Or perhaps she felt compelled to get him. She never left anyone behind if she could help it.
Had the loss on Virmire led her to taking it one step farther, into the realm of the impossible?
Was it virtue or pride that killed her?
Alenko survived the ordeal. His report said that Shepard ordered him to help the crew evacuate and get in the escape shuttle.
She had saved him on Virmire. He owed her his borrowed time.
If he was a real man he would have gone back for her. If he had really loved her, he would have gone after her, orders be damned.
Not that it would have mattered. He couldn’t have saved her and he certainly wouldn’t have been able to convince her to get on that shuttle. He would have been just one more body in the rubble and that would have made things easier for Cerberus. He didn’t like loose ends.
He brought her back from the dead. He had given her more than anyone else could have. He had given her what no one else had ever been able to. She is Lady Lazarus and she would rise from the ashes and would certainly eat men like air again.
He was counting on it.
Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.
In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.
